Granny Smith apples are named for the woman who first grew them, Maria Ann Smith of New South Wales, Australia. In 1868 she told neighbors that the sport seedling had developed from crab apples originally grown in Tasmania. Unfortunately, Granny Smith never lived to see her apples become popular the world over. These excellent eating & cooking apples were first imported to the US from New Zealand in 1960. Here, a group of Granny's apples shines in reflected store lighting.

Congratulations RC on your contest win! Looks like the beginning of a great pie. I had a Granny Smith Apple tree once---and I made a lot of pies--but was too young to realize how special it was to have that tree and the two cherry trees. :) f/v

Now I see that you "tied" with your own identical image LOL Technical glitch, I guess. So congratulations on the 3rd place win.
