Winterkill
The cold never used to bother me.
I'd venture out in the depths
of New England winters hatless,
(sometimes even with wet hair),
no gloves, no scarf,
coat usually unbuttoned.
I welcomed the wind
that brought blood rushing to my cheeks;
I felt invigorated, alive, invincible.
Then I met you.
All that winter you chased me
round the mulberry bush,
always letting me keep
just a few steps ahead in the circle.
I was invigorated, alive, invincible.
You were a man on fire,
a furnace full of cannel-coal -
smoky, easily-ignited,
volatile soft shale ready to spread
that generous warmth as soon
as I let you catch me.
But you never did.
When I stopped running
and turned round,
hatless, coatless,
expecting to be enveloped
in a blaze of affection, you froze;
there was no warmth.
There was no fire.
You wooed me, in your weird way,
as ardently as any man ever did,
though when you took the witness stand
you denied it stoutly.
Immovable as a glacier you stood,
cloaking yourself in ice and lies,
dismissing all that had passed between us
as an opium dream conjured from
fevered fantasies existing only in my imagination.
Now I dare not venture out into the cold
unless well-wrapped.
No longer does the kiss of winter bring me to life.
Unless I am hatted my teeth chatter;
gloveless, my hands redden and crack.
I not only do up the buttons on my coat
but layer myself underneath with wool;
instead of your arms, a scarf hugs my neck.
I cannot bear to even look at the snow-covered hills.
All I see is you, withdrawn into your frigid majesty,
throwing me to the mercy of the wind.
