i have learned to trust
in the perfidy of men.
the only surprise
left in love for me
is meeting one
whose actions carry
the weight of truth.
sometimes i wonder
if i want love
or if i'm just enamored
of its fleeting charms.
i know it's not
all roses but instead
a great bloody arena
where lovers bring
the disappointments
of the day and hurl them
like weapons of war
against the other.
if these thoughts
don't frighten you
draw near -
but don't tell me
how wonderful you are
for words are cheap currency.
show me
by how you live.
you must walk the walk
through blood and mud
and fiery meadows with me.
