Time's Fools
Time is a shapeshifter
masquerading as a constant.
We live our linear lives - a narrow band -
never noticing until the end approaches
how the days grow shorter even as we play,
taking for granted that each one
will last as long as those preceding.
On we go, oblivious to the shrinking of the sun
until, at last,
awakening in the darkness of a dawn
clipped short by that most clever jester,
Time,
we realize a change,
momentous in its implications, has occurred.
A month becomes a week,
a week becomes a day,
a day no more than one brief blink,
impossible to capture.
We are Time's fools,
and how tenaciously we cling to that sere sun
even as the final frost approaches.

An image of happy springtime thoughts to me as I finally see the signs of the season where I live. You caught just the right amount of detail in the chipping paint, rusty hinge and the veins of the leaves. Those beautiful leaves really sing against that red gate.
RC DeWinter replied:
Thanks so much, Emily, glad it inspired happy thoughts. It's actually an ancient barn door that they are clingng to.

Gina, I love the simplicity of this gorgeous image. The light, shadows, textures and color are truly amazing. Nicely done! v/l
