Artlessly Artful
In the hot embrace of a southern sun I walk an antediluvian shore,
ancient rock distilled to sand so soft its envelopment of my unshod feet
is a caress rather than the punishment meted out by the beaches
of my native New England.
Cliffs ring this beach - proud, upstanding citizens of nature,
clothed in the motley vegetation common to saltbound environments.
In the places where it is bare the rock is the rich red of mellow brick.
Or it is black, born of the violent volcanic spasms
that birthed this island three millennia ago.
But what catches my eye is the candy bowl of color
at the base of the cliffs.
Along with the aforementioned red and black,
smaller stones lay in a riotous rainbow, so artfully arranged
they appeared to have been placed there
by some primitive designer.
But no.
Though some of them form circles reminiscent of firepits,
I know they are just accidents - albeit beautiful ones - of nature.
Would that we could replicate such careless magnificence;
instead, we, in our singleminded pursuit of domination and control,
build palaces meant to maximize profit,
return on investment.
Suddenly I feel pure and holy, at one with the wisdom of nature;
with imperfect words that tumble heedless of anything
but hopefully resultant beauty, I am erecting intangible monuments,
born not of violent volcanic spasms of the earth but of the spirit.
I will never be rich, never be powerful; my words are not creatures of commerce.
But perhaps in a yet to be coalesced future they will be found,
lying in the open as they fell, and prove to be a delight
to some yet unborn explorer.

Beautiful creation has a little abstract feel to it! vf
RC DeWinter replied:
Yes, a bit of impressionist brush work gives it that quality, Kathi, thank you.
