For much of my life
I was afraid of the dark.
Afraid? Hell, I was terrified.
I felt (but did not know)
what lurked in the blueblack night,
waiting to snatch my soul.
Everything was vague, menacing,
unseen but almost palpable.
I slept with the light on.
You could not have paid me
to walk by the salt marsh
in the gathering gloom of dusk,
let alone step outside,
even into the yard, after dark,
for in the dark I felt the presence of evil
and trembled before it.
I can't tell you how I overcame this.
Perhaps it was realizing the force-fed religion,
populated with hellfire and demons,
was a fairytale.
Perhaps it was being grabbed
and shaken by Death, then tossed back
into this scummy pond to live another day.
Perhaps it was simply growing up.
I have no answer and I don't care.
Now I love the dark. I crave it.
I sit in it, perfectly content not to see
anything but the visions in my mind.
I take myself to deserted places
and never feel a frisson of fear
standing in the silence, gazing up at stars
that glitter like diamonds on denim.
So if you see me sitting in the dark,
don't think it's because I'm depressed.
I blossom when the rest of the world sleeps,
unfolding in the embrace of an old enemy
now become my salvation.
The dark blots out the ugly world,
softening the jagged edges of reality
with the magickal patina of the unknown
I call possibility.

A night view of historic Bull's Bridge, one of three covered bridges still standing in Connecticut, and the one-lane road it spans in the town of Kent. Although there was an earlier bridge in this location dating back to the time of George Washington, the accepted date of the current bridge on the National Register of Historic Places is 1842. Other sources claim Bull's Bridge was built in 1858 by Jacob Bull of Dover Plains, New York for $3,000.

I love all the textures you have created giving the bridge a more painterly feeling. f/v

Hi RC, I'm always drawn to your work - there is always drama as well as a story. The covered bridge celebrates an earlier time and is still standing through the efforts of preservationists. A joy for all of us. Beautiful work. Best regards, Sharon LF
