A Love Like Flowers

It's been a long time since anyone
gave me flowers, but you always did.
You knew I loved them and it was
an easy way out for every occasion.

Of course you never took into account
the type of flowers I most admired;
I think you grabbed the first thing you saw.
But I always responded gratefully,
even though I was often pretending.

It's a given cut flowers will die, usually quickly.
How like your thoughtless love those flowers were.
The symbolism is perfect; it was never going to last.
I never thought about it then.
Only now are all the pieces falling into place
so perfectly.
