To Save the Barn
Last I looked the barn was standing,
weatherbeaten in the bright colors of
neglect; rot has set in.
Boards are warped, streaked, decaying.
The foundation is cracked. Dirty water
melting and refreezing has bled into
rivulets, staining the stone; it would be
easy to catch a toe and fall before reaching
the door, which has narrowed into darkness.
I couldn't see the roof
but the shingle edges are rough, uneven;
rain may be leaking, soaking the beams.
Green things still grow nearby but not
in the abundance we expect, leaves and
blossoms sickly, discolored.
The sky was lowering and the clouds
wore the increasingly unfriendly face
of a coming storm.
I saw no trace of rockets' red glare, but I
wouldn't be surprised if it materialized
in that ominous sea of clouds.
The flag painted on the front side
of the barn is fading, its once-proud glory
diminished by long neglect.
Restoration is imperative.
Time to get a crew in, if we can find enough
good people willing to tackle the job.

I love the rich reds Gina, and the light and shadows are perfect! I was so caught up in the color and shadows, I almost missed the flag! Gorgeous work! And your poem... I was reading, getting lost in your descriptions, waiting for the story, but where you went...! Powerful and spot on and such a perfect metaphor! Wow. Beautifully done Gina! l/f!
RC DeWinter replied:
I knew you would get the poem, Meg, I had to do it. Thanks for your steadfast encouragement.
