I'd been thinking quite a bit about my dream of wandering around Amherst with Vincent. I particularly remembered the part about us having dinner and how animated and lively Vincent had been. I decided to paint a picture of the back door of the restaurant where we had had such an enjoyable time.
I sat down to work and realized I probably couldn't do it justice. Compared to the great masters of art, my skills are so limited. I still have so much to learn. But I decided to give it my best shot.
I started working - adjusting colors, playing with light, fixing flaws in the photograph.
When I begin painting, I tried different brushstrokes, changed palettes several times, but just couldn't seem to bring that door to life. I sat there, unsure of how to approach the work.
Then I remembered the wonderful light in the paintings of the old Masters of the High Dutch Renaissance - how they used tone and shadow to brilliantly illuminate their work; how just the right brushstroke in just the right place could bring a piece to life.
With this in mind, I made a few more adjustments and began again. I took my time, fussing over pixels, continually examining my progress for possible improvements. As I worked I remembered something Vincent had said to me.
"It begins in the mind. You must first see it there, then transfer that vision to your eyes, and then to your hand."
It took a long time, but finally I felt I had captured that door in the late afternoon light as best I could. Here you see the result of my labors. I hope I have portrayed what I saw in my mind when Vincent and I left the restaurant and I turned around for another look before we continued our journey.

This is a gorgeous image ... there's always something so compelling about door and windows and this one's absolute perfection ... love the thick paint work and heavey texturing ... but it's the warm glow of the color and light that really draw me in. Beautifully composed as well!! l/f
