An allegory for the Greek Goddess of Spring Persephone's return to the underworld kingdom she rules with her husband, King Hades. For four months she rules the dead alongside Hades, but she is allowed to live above ground for the rest of the year. Her reappearance heralds the coming of spring. Persephone's tears nourish all growing things that are then gathered by her mother Demeter, the Goddess of the Harvest, as Persephone returns to the underworld to resume her throne until the the cycle of the Great Wheel summons her back to the land of the living.
