Walking Home in Winter
The town lay sleeping under an inky sky
that promised snow, eventually;
the stars tried hard to shine but were conquered
by clouds blowing in from the west
as I, layered warm against winter's bite,
hurried home from the Bluebird Cafe.
We walked these streets together once,
when everything seemed possible,
when we were on fire,
so in love we could have braved this chill
without our coats;
but that's a chapter long written and closed
with the finality of ink smeared by tears.
I don't know, really, why I stayed -
it wasn't the job, the apartment
or even the town itself, charming as it is.
Perhaps I didn't want to bury the memories
of the tsunami that was you,
still wanting to swim in the scarlet sea
of passion
that shredded the sense of inadequacy I'd worn
like a second skin, leaving me
a shining piece of seabeaten glass,
rough edges smoothed to something
inviting touch.
Or maybe I was just lazy.
Whatever.
I'm still here - still alone, still shining,
inviting touch; but there hasn't been anyone
walking the beach lately looking for
treasure.
It's okay.
I don't cry when I think of you,
although I spend too much time wondering -
where you are, if you're well,
if you're swimming that scarlet sea
with someone else.
I bet you are.
But as much as I love that sea,
I don't think I'll be swimming anytime soon.

Very like an Edward Hopper, there's a foreboding sky to add to the tale so well told! F/L++
RC DeWinter replied:
Thanks, Nancy, I actually used a Monet palette and brush set for this but I can see your point.
