sunstroke
another day almost done
i wanted to see the sun go down
a formal burial for the needlesticks
of anxiety and curettage of the soul
inflicted by the idiot banality
of every day that holds me hostage
i reached the shore just at twilight
the lake a calm blue mirror
the sky a lowering tapestry of clouds
i'd missed the sinking of the sun
but its persistent radiant shedding
stained the dusk in murky gold
the million insect choir nattered
and twanged and buzzed a chorus
of mad falsetto trills betraying
the peace of the coming night
my shredded nerves jangled along
in a harmony from hell
and so died another sputtering day
with no comfort forthcoming from nature
leaving me unshriven unredeemed
and praying those clouds carry rain
to slay tomorrow's sun and quench
the furnace of frustration raging in my soul

On the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, the sun sinks behind golden clouds on a peaceful summer evening. Reimagined and painted in digital oils from a photograph by Brian Coppola.

I love this and the poem RC. Perfect poem for the painting and perfect painting for the poem!
RC DeWinter replied:
Most kind, thanks, Sandra. 99% of the time the paintings come first, and are the prompts for the poetry.

Wonderful moody atmosphere Gina. The tones are perfect, and I love the sky. And the poem... Another piece of brilliance. You've captured the hopelessness and resignation beautifully with your wonderous words and turn of phrase. I love them both. l/f!
