Losing Track
The forest called to me in the rusty voice of autumn,
heavy with the passing of days but vibrant with the tang
only late October days can bring.
I plunged, fearless, into the tangle
of trees and the vines that embraced them,
losing myself in the anonymity of nature.
Caped in the richness of flaming maples,
I remembered when my heart had beaten hotly
with the scarlet of anticipation,
but could not recall exactly when it had withered,
shrunken and blue, into resignation.
