arts and crafts (look ma no hands)
i have always admired those
with steady hands
steady eyes
i have neither
not for me the intricacies
of craftsmanship
i can't even braid gimp
let alone hair
when i gaze at a painting
with perfect strokes
bright touches of color
in all the right places
or the precision of wood
shaped into usable form
i ache
knowing i will never create
such beauty with my hands
no
i am only fit for grosser tasks
kneading bread
lifting stones into place
to build a wall
slapping wide swathes of paint
onto a wall
while never ever touching the trim
but i am gifted
in a small way with words
a sea of syllables and sounds
into which i dip my net
to seine up whatever comes
throwing back the unneeded
keeping that which suits
and then can write
in praise of those
whose hands and eyes
dance a pas de deux
of choreographed precision
amazing all with what is possible
to craft with the human hand
