the house upstreet
up on the corner
top of the street
the white house sits
encircled by trees
well off the road
suburban island
nothing too fancy
a plain rectangle notable only for its size
three stories rising to meet the sky
not sure why it speaks to me
i've always wanted to live there
in the warm summer evenings
i sit on the lawn
gazing upstreet at the house
lost in the melancholia of old dreams
rewriting the script of life
i always end up in that house
nonsense i know
a change of scene doesn't change a soul
but i do it anyway
just because it passes the time
between daylight and darkness
and there is one thing i own i would not
if i lived in the house on the hill
i console myself with the skyshow
the stars that dance in a storm of tulle
as the sun is slain in purpleblue taffeta
unless one climbed to attic
and inched onto the roof
this cosmic ballet could not be seen
from where the house sits
so i watch and i dream as i live
down below in the muck of the herd
grateful for small beauties i stitch together
into the quilt i pull over my head
to make sleep possible
