Lost Cause
Pink gin and cancer sticks, burning for you,
summer night sweaty alone in this bed,
wanting to dream but you've stolen my sleep,
heart beats an abandoned lover's tattoo.
Nothing to do but get up and repair
down to the harbor to mourn with the sea.
Moonlight and starshine do nothing to help;
waves sing a dirge while I try not to care.
Is there no cure for this longing that lives,
gnawing the peace I so desperately need?
Would that a tidal wave pulled me from shore
into the nothingness only death gives.
That will not happen, so I turn to go
back to the room with your ghost waiting there,
offering cigarettes, liquor, regret.
Goodbye to hopeless love - heartache, hello.
