There's an old banjo hanging on a wall
down at the bookstore cafe;
it's been there for years.
It's never taken down and played
although they have all kinds of music
there all the time.
Admittedly it's not in first-class shape,
but someone with the right touch could coax
some wonderful notes from those strings.
If I were an instrument that would be me.
I'm an oldtimer and not in first-class shape either,
but always on display just the same.
I feel eyes on me all the time, but no one
reaches out to bring me to life.
Someone with the right touch
could coax some beautiful music out of me, too.
