Perfectly Uncoordinated
Nature's a careless slut,
yet everything she does in autumn,
no matter how slipshod,
is a feast for the eye.
Scarlet creeper vines ribbon evergreens,
their ends trailing off messily,
but nobody cares.
That passionate red gets an automatic pass.
Wild grapes bunched in clusters
crowd each other unmercifully
instead of branching out
to fill in bare spots.
But that's okay too;
when sunlight hits them they glow
like burnished pearls.
Maple leaves in motley hang willy-nilly
wherever the wind drops them,
crucified prisoners caught
on the jagged ends of broken branches,
a carnival riot of vulgar color
that somehow works perfectly.
The ground is an obstacle course,
nuts and fungi and even more leaves collude
to make walking noisy, slippery,
possibly even dangerous;
who knows what lurks under that beautiful mess?
Yep, the old girl's got it down pat;
she puts the entire candy store on display
however she damn well pleases
and we buy it all, happily.

That blue! I am in love with it. I agree that everything nature does in autumn is a feast for the eye. The description of the debris on the ground oh this is so good. F/L.
