I have been following Vincent's advice lately, trying to steer my thoughts in a positive direction as often possible every day, although it's still difficult to overcome the dreary circumstances of my life such as it is now. But an opportunity presented itself, and I reached out with both hands, grabbed it and said yes to life.
I will be leaving shortly for six weeks to be away in a place I have never been, to stay with people I have never met, and I can't wait. Even though doing this will take me away from my daily work and cost me a packet of money I don't really have, I am going. I have locked myself away from pleasure for too long and now that the chance to enjoy an adventure is before me, I said YES instead of being safe, practical and isolated.
My spirits have lightened, and hope grows again in my heart. I even had a dream that highlighted the celebratory feeling that accompanies my plans.
A few nights ago I lay in bed, sleepy but excited about the prospect of traveling again, meeting new people, of discovery and exploration. Eventually I calmed down enough to slip once again into the land of dreams.
I found myself in one of my favorite places - New York City. I was somewhere in the mid 50s, walking along a street lined with large vintage apartment buildings. It was a warm summer night, and fireworks were lighting up the sky. I stood on the sidewalk, watching the bright colors exploding, and smiled, thinking how well their dazzling brilliance matched my current mood. I had no idea of the occasion requiring the fireworks display and didn't care. I simply enjoyed the show.
Suddenly I felt I was not alone. I turned and there was Vincent, hands in his pockets, eyes trained on the sky, mesmerized by the merry dance of the fireworks. I tapped him lightly on the shoulder.
"Good evening, Vincent, come to celebrate?"
He dragged his luminous eyes away from the sky and smiled.
"I have indeed," he replied. "I am here to celebrate you."
"Me? What so particularly wonderful have I done to merit this?" I asked.
Vincent took both of my hands in his and swung me around in a circle. He caught me so off-guard I nearly fell off the curb, but managed to stay upright.
"Enough!" I finally shouted. "I'm getting dizzy!"
He stopped twirling and propped me up against his shoulder.
"What do you think?" he demanded. "You said yes! At last, you have cast off a bit of fear and seized the chance to do something new, something challenging. It deserves celebrating!"
He lost all his dignity and almost did a little jig on the sidewalk while I laughed out loud like a loon.
"Is there anything you don't know?" I giggled.
"Not much," he admitted. "I keep a close eye on my friends."
"You certainly do. But I don't mind, because I'm always glad to see you."
We began walking slowly down the sidewalk as the fireworks faded in puffs of gray smoke.
"So, what pushed you over the edge, to accept an invitation into the unknown?" Vincent inquired.
"My heart," I answered without hesitation. "My gut. It just feels right."
He smiled and clapped. "Bon! Good for you! That tells me that you are allowing yourself to breathe, to open yourself to new possibilities, and you have needed to do that for a long time."
I snorted. "You've been nagging me about it for a long time, I may have done it just to shut you up," I answered, full of cheek.
He shook his head. "No, I've never noticed that you are particularly obedient," he said. "Yes, I know I have urged you in that direction, but you must've felt something shift in order to make such a leap."
"I did," I admitted. "I thought a long time about how I don't want to die without ever living again, and decided better a risk than never to discover what is possible."
"Ah," Vincent said tellingly. "So it's like that, is it?"
I shook my head. "I'm not sure what it's like, Vincent. But I'm going to find out. I can't walk away from this without knowing."
By this time we had reached a corner where a late night restaurant was still serving. Vincent gestured toward the door.
"Let us sit and share some refreshment, and you can tell me all about it."
"Yes, let's," I answered. "I have much to tell, and you no doubt will have much to say about it."
And as we entered the restaurant the land of dreams melted into daylight as I lay there, ready to get up to face whatever awaits.

It is the last day of the year 2017 and I stumbled upon your 2014 ,artwork of New York City. It brought back a flood of memories for me .Visiting the city with my Dad, who worked for the, New York Post. and having lunch in the the Automat. It wasn't a rag newspaper, then. And the Automat was soooo modern ,food displayed behind glass windows...Also for a moment I floated up with the many Macy Day Parade ballons that I viewed back then. But altimately reality pulled and re-anchored my frozen feet.. The Village , the Lions and the strange smells wafting from the 2 floor Chinese restaurant., the museums, the horses in central Park.. Thanks for your wonderful art and wriiting . I look forward to what you will create in 2018. fav tw Susan Brown
