Description
mission impossible
in a far-away land
where I knew no one
(not even those i was staying with, really)
i finally knew in my bones
what it is to be a stranger
un etranger
ein Auslander
un extranjero
completely alone
understood by no one
(homeless, really)
i could not sleep
no matter how heavy my eyes
(sagging in the wasteland of the wakeful)
nor exhausted my limbs
(from the effort of holding myself together)
the motor in my brain kept whirring
wearing grooves in soft tissue
that quickly filled with the silt of dread
after weeks of daylight masquerading
as a sane person
(for the sake of civility and my clueless hosts)
there came a night when i couldn't take it anymore
i decided i did not want to live
and knew exactly how and where i would end the misery
i had been taken to a wild and lonely promontory
overlooking the sea
a fierce climb culminating in a wide-open space
from which to admire the intoxicating changeability
of the southern sea
fortunately it wasn't far
(and a leap from that height would be a guarantee)
in some black hour after midnight
(already fully clothed right down to the necessary boots)
i quit my room and oozed out the door
accompanied only by the squawks of nightbirds and the silent moon
i walked otherwise-unlit deserted streets
a madwoman on a mission
when i reached the preserve the gate was locked
but the fence was climbable
(and so wound up was i
i believe i could have jumped it
as easily as the cow did the moon)
so up and over and on the other side
i began the ascent to the cliff-top
although the night was chill
(it being, i was told, an unusually cold spring)
the exertions of the climb kept me comfortable enough
upandupandupandup
(stopping only once to retie a wayward bootlace)
and there i was
at the top of that particular part of the world
i walked out to the edge of the wooded cliff
surveying by the light of the moon
what might be visible below
hoping to see some wickedly jagged rocks
exposed above the cerulean sea
no go
so moving as close to the edge as i could
picked my spot willy-nilly
i raised my eyes to the sky
for what i hoped was a last long look
(and in my giddy insanity was tempted to cry out
goodbye cruel world as i fell)
and as i gazed the stars began to dance
and i was mesmerized
frozen in moonlight
i stood
and did not come back to myself
until the sun dropped a curtain
on the show
i could not jump in daylight
it just would not be fitting
defeated
i turned
beginning the long descent to reality
and arriving back at my room
unheard unseen
fell into bed and slept for the first time
in weeks
