eschaton
in the middle of the night
the planets collide
another big bang
the air is brown
thick
full of unbreathable chunks
and i am alone on an earth
aflame
spinning toward what's left of the sun
i gasp and choke
and then awake
dizzy
disoriented
alone in a bed drowning
in tears and sweat
my skin on fire
the freezing room for once
a comfort instead of a prison
i heave myself up
and stumble to the window
needing to see the sky
needing to know it was only a dream
and there are the trees
and the river
shimmering under a softly melting moon
and for the first time since i don't know when
am glad to be alive
