December Dawn
The dawn promised what I call an English day,
fairing up soft but not sunny,
and indeed that atomic orb was veiled in clouds
that promised neither rain nor much of anything else.
I watch the gray lake, calm and unruffled,
reflecting the shy uncertainty of the sky,
and wish I were in England or anywhere
I could be a stranger.
Because I need to unzip my skin,
become unrecognizable.
A spiderweb of strings pulls me in too many directions,
and Christmas is coming with all its beribboned nonsense:
the exchange of unwanted, useless gifts,
platters of food promising unneeded calories and dyspepsia,
voices stumbling through the snow in an offkey open sleigh.
Then waking on the Feast of Stephen,
bruised with leftover bonhomie and good cheer
while my heart crumbles under the weight of the unforgettable:
you furious, redfaced, forced early into the world
with all your promise waiting to unfold.
Yes, I wish I were England,
where there would be no Christmas for me,
just a room in some hotel
and a draught of warm ale in the bar.
