restless
needing some cheap entertainment
i wandered down to the bar on the corner
the place where they serve strong drinks
and look the other way when someone lights up
it's a motley crowd they draw
men in suits
men unshaven after a long day's labor
college boys yukking it up
while surreptitiously eyeing
the rainbow of women on parade
everything from prom queens
to walmart babes
to predatory professionals
there aren't many unreconstructed
plaindirt types like yours truly
i go with no expectations
and i'm never disappointed
the men in suits are mostly married
and if they have plans to step out
it won't be with a hardjawed crone
who doesn't bother to dye her hair
and is as old or older than they are
besides which i never poach
the laborers flirt with women pancaked in makeup
as thick and sturdy as joint compound
with chests like battleship prows
and the boys don't know what they want
except it isn't me
occasionally someone offers to buy me a drink
but i usually decline
mostly because i know i have nothing of interest to say
i have been so far away
from the usual middleclass milieu
it's difficult for me to relate
i don't watch tv or think cruises are fun and have no
(pick one or more):
boss/house/investment/car/kid/grandkid
stories to trade
i go there just for the hell of it and the bourbon
and the chance to observe homo sapiens
in a relatively unrestrained environment
i watch the progress of the prowlers
and make little bets with myself
about who will leave with who
and who will strike out every time
i catch snatches of conversations
that make me laugh and others
(usually involving politics)
that make my blood boil
and occasionally even a line that later sparks a poem
i guess i'm a vampire
who instead of a nourishing bowl of blood
needs an injection of normal
to know that real life
silly and relaxed messy and loud
still exists
even though i exist outside most of it
and when closing time rolls around
and i'm full to the eyeballs with normal
i take myself back to my solitary palace
with damn few regrets about what i'm missing
