night city
i love the city best when darkness
swallows the dust and the manycolored lights
switch on every one a gaudy invitation
to the almostforgotten child
come out and play!
the rawness melts away
and the heart of the city beats clean and free
the mask can be tossed
no need to pretend to be glamorous
i want to smile at a stranger
charm the old man in the deli out of a bagel
stir my coffee with a stick of licorice
nick a rose out of a sidewalk bouquet
hold it between my teeth
and dance in the skinny alleys
where you can feel the earth sleeping
six or sixteen or sixty feet under the pavement
and the rumble of the train rushing to the river
is just the syncopation you need
the night city is dessert for the soul
a strawberry sundae waiting to be tasted

We also connect with harlequins, even the word. As always love your description and 'skinny alleys'. You are so great with words. Colors really pop here and dance all over. F/L

I love the lights and colors and energy in this exciting abstract Gina! Perfect title! And your poem is wonderful! I feel like I danced in the alley with you! So much pure joy in your words! And freedom, from life, from the day, from everything except the lights and the moments. Beautifully done! l/f!
