where the heart isn't
the twentyfifth of december
has become an orgy of obligation
overspending
overeating
overoohingandaahing
over meaningless bestowals
of oddments and endments
and afterwards the discomfort
of a gutful of food
too rich too rare too much
fermenting in the spirits of the season
they say home is where the heart is
and everyone wants to be home for the holidays
my heart is in the midnight sky
never have i spent a christmas there
i have yet to open a decorated door
and stepped
not into an overheated bedlam
of tinselled gaud
a blizzard of shredded giftskin
the ticktock boom of seasonal electronica
overlaid with a shrieking chorus of merryhappyhohoho
but into the embrace of stars

Yes the Magic of a star filled sky, crunching frost ladden soil, still cold crisp air and silence.... . These are the special gifts of Winter.
