Rum Go
Have you noticed when you're drunk - not pie-eyed mind you,
but just drunk enough to know you're drunk -
and you know you're about to do something stupid
you say Fuck it and do it anyway?
Or maybe you don't - but that's me all over.
The other night I'd been tippling,
a tot every now and again
over the course of a couple of hours,
trying to lubricate the muse;
she was stubborn and silent,
an ungenerous Sybil
slouching in the corner laughing at me.
In disgust at my failure to loosen her lips
I threw on a jacket and went walking to the sea,
hoping the murmur of the water would help.
The moon shone gold on the sleeping world,
crickets and small creatures of the night
being the only others abroad.
There is a series of small cliffs
ringing a portion of the beach -
any of which, if one is willing to climb,
provides an unparalleled view of the sea and sky.
Spring blooms spangled the seagrass
and scrub on the nearest one,
tempting me to try.
I knew I was somewhat impaired but being me said
Fuck it, I can do this, and began my ascent,
eyes not on the uneven path
but on that glorious moon off to the east.
I had almost reached the top
when I put a foot wrong and stumbled,
twisting an ankle, falling to the ground.
The air was blue with curses
as I removed my shoe to massage
the rapidly-swelling joint;
suddenly a different pain clutched me.
My heart spasmed as I remembered
meeting you
on another night I'd been operating
under the influence.
There you stood, as irresistible as this cliff.
My skin prickled; shreds of sense
submerged in my blood's alcoholic sea
screamed "Danger!"
Warning bells clanged as we locked eyes,
but faded as the voice of reason died
in the clutches of desire.
Fuck it, I said, I can do this.
The result, naturally, was as disastrous
as this ill-fated climb, and just like tonight,
when I found myself lying, torn and bleeding,
on the sand of the arena, I cursed you and fate and love
and everything else I could think of -
except, of course, myself.
And just like tonight, when I could stand again,
I got up, dusted myself off and walked on,
straight and proud,
saying Fuck it - I can do this.

This luminous moonlight touches everything in this image. Would love to be at the edge of this cliff watching for hours. The description reminds me of so many times in life when I have felt just this and arrived at the peak/pinnacle. F/L

The painting has a magical and dreamy mood to it. I love your story. I'm a one drink wonder, the very meaning of cheap date. I didn't do the Fuckit route though. LOL! I love your work.
