broken birches
when the walls began to wail
and my ears bled
in their sharp screech of loneliness
it was time to go
out into the mild october night
that waited unperturbed
to shred my shroud
being a lover
but not a swinger of birches
although someone i loved had been
i walked out to a point on the lake
across from which
stands a rugged cliff jutting out
into the water
a drydocked battleship overgrown
with trees
pine and other conifers mostly
but in the middle
of greenbrown camouflage
stand silver birches
surrounded by sumac and spruce
i needed to see those birches
for all kinds of silly sentimental reasons
the main one being they remind me of home
not the physical but the home of the heart
built of all the things i love
as I neared the shore across from the cliff
i heard my long ago first husband
reciting frost
my heart clutched as i thought of
all the water under that bridge
and how glad i am we're still friends
even though the best of both of us
is dead
and then in front of me the cliff
lit by a mercury moon spilling silver
on the water and everything surrounding
i squinted to
pick out the birches
and they were there all right
bent and broken
as if giants had been swinging on them
ripping the tender leafy tops
right off
their slender splintered trunks
and what remained of
topmost branches all akilter
naked
in diana's luminous forgiveness
and i turned away
knowing you could not have
swung on those birches as they stood
knowing i had a hole to patch
in the wall

I love your starry starry sky and melting moon! And the play of light on the land and water! Such a deliciously mysterious and welcoming scene! And your poem. Wow.
