the stand-in

it rained in the night
i woke up once and heard it
pelting against the many-paned windows
in the unfamiliar room in which i slept

and then i dreamed without remembering
awaking to sunlight
forgetting the rain
i walked out into the soft october morning

and there on the ground lay a leaf
such as i'd never seen
what maple sheds blue leaves?
but there wet with tears it lay

a helium lightness filled me
as i thanked the small sad leaf
for being my stand-in
knowing i would not have to cry that day
